After 50 years of 1,2-metalate rearrangements with approproriate leaving groups, this paper describes a novel process for triggering 1,2-rearrangements by oxidation of an incipient radical. The scope of the radical precursor includes α-iodo ketones, esters, nitriles, primary amides, α-fluorinated halo-acetates and perfluoroalkyl iodides.
