Vivien Leigh

The Theatre Collection is delighted to have recently been donated the John Vickers Photographic Archive. This comprehensive collection documents Vickers’ entire career from the 1930s to his death in 1976. It comprises film and glass plate negatives and photographic prints as well as books and correspondence. Vickers began his career as assistant to photographer Angus McBean, and from 1939 was running his own studio. Vickers became a prominent theatre photographer, most notably working for the Old Vic during the 1940s and 1950s. His striking portraits of actors including Viven Leigh gained him a high reputation.
