This is a page from the promptbook for London Old Vic’s 1957 production of Hamlet. A hand-written note that initially said ‘Call Miss Jefford’ has been clearly amended to read ‘Call Miss Dench.’ Indeed it was Judi Dench to be called, as this was her professional debut for London Old Vic Company, playing Ophelia, as a last minute replacement. The Theatre Collection holds a wealth of material relating to this production including photos, programmes and books of press cuttings. The press reviews chart an interesting shift in opinion of the as yet unknown Dench’s performance; initial criticism gives way to increasing praise as the run continues.
