Encephalartos lehmannii

In the late 19th Century a British army soldier engaged in the anti-Boer campaign, in what is now the Eastern Cape, dug up a small piece of the South African cycad, Encephalartos lehmannii. On return to his home in Bath he gave the young plant to a local nurseryman. The plant grew well and caught the eye of a local railway worker, a Mr Stamp. Many years later the nursery owner retired, giving the cycad to Mr Stamp. He in turn looked after it for twenty years before donating the century old cycad to the University Botanic Garden in 1999.
