Wills sculpture

The Wills family tobacco business was founded in Bristol in the late eighteenth century. The company was hugely successful and the family began to fund local initiatives, donating generously to the University of Bristol. Henry Overton Wills III was the first Chancellor of the University of Bristol, holding the post from 1909-1911. This commemorative bronze sculpture of Wills was created by Edwin Whitney-Smith in 1912, the year following Wills’ death. Whitney-Smith was born in Bath and attended Bath and Bristol Schools of Art.
