Lecture description

A lecture on Defending the Realm: the security of the state in 2009 took place on 15 October in the Reception Room of the Wills Memorial Building.

The event was the 13th in a series of 19 lectures (the other 18 of which are public) forming part of the University’s centenary celebrations. The lecture doubled as the 14th Policy & Politics Annual Lecture. Policy & Politics is a multi-disciplinary journal analysing the theory, origins and impact of public policy. The Annual Lecture was established in 1996 to enhance further the international profile of the journal, which is published by The Policy Press at the University of Bristol.

Biography of Jonathan Evans

Director General of MI5

Jonathan came to the University of Bristol in 1977 and read Classical Studies. He joined the Security Service in 1980, rising up the ranks to become Director of International Counter Terrorism in 2001 – ten days before 9/11. Four years later he was appointed Deputy Director General and in 2007 he became MI5’s 16th Director General. In 2008 the University made him an honorary Doctor of Laws.
