Poppy Miller Graduate profile

Poppy Miller | MSci Cellular and Molecular Medicine | Currently working as a technician at the Flow Cytometry Facility, University of Bristol

Why did you choose Bristol for your undergraduate degree?

"I shortlisted universities based on the courses offered as I knew I wanted to learn more the body and microbes. Every aspect of my first visit to Bristol was positive and I liked the diverse range of units offered on the BMS programme; I wasn’t entirely sure what I would enjoy most and being able to try units from different schools and then choose the path that was most interesting really appealed to me. I found the Flow Cytometry Facility within the University fascinating and was impressed that many different cells could be characterised in seconds. I appreciated the opportunity to transfer to the CMM MSci in my 3rd year as was keen to extend my studies at Bristol; the course seemed unique in the way it offered the opportunity for research experience as a real-world researcher and it also gave a taster of other possible career paths such as starting a spin-out company."

How would you sum up your experience?

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bristol University; I’ve met many new and interesting people, enjoyed my studies and because of the pathway I chose developed a comprehensive knowledge of how microbes cause disease and the host immune response. I have fallen in love with Bristol; a vibrant and beautiful city and if possible, will live here permanently."

What were the staff like?

"The staff were knowledgeable, passionate about their work and approachable. All the staff, from academics to support to admin, are keen for you to maximise your potential and succeed. The regular meetings with my personal tutor were always beneficial, not only did they offer support and guidance but I found having a tutor provided consistency during my degree. Being dyslexic, the additional support I was given was exemplary and made a real difference."

How did your degree influence what you went on to next?

"It made me realise I am best suited to an academic environment and I’ve been inspired to continue my academic journey. Applying for and being selected to work in the Flow Cytometry Facility at the University of Bristol is a perfect fit. Within this role I’m learning more about flow cytometry and have the opportunity to talk to many researchers from different groups. This networking will help me decide the research area for my future PhD."

What advice would you offer to students contemplating a place at Bristol?

"I would say go for it! The flexibility in module choices coupled with the course content makes Bristol a strong contender from an academic perspective. You will be taught by experts in their field, such quality of teaching is inspirational no matter what your end goal is. In terms of quality of life, Bristol is an amazing city; there is something here for everyone whether you want to wander around the beautiful area of Clifton or browse the vast array of shops on Gloucester Road. Most places are within walking distance and walking up the numerous Bristol hills keeps you fit!"
