AI in Precision Psychiatry Workshop

Thursday, 2 May 2024, 12:00 – 14:00

Room no. 3.30, Wills Memorial Building, Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1QE

Purpose of the workshop:

Hosted by the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute, this interdisciplinary workshop will bring together colleagues at Bristol and Cardiff Universities with an interest in AI in health, to discuss application of AI in the field of mental health, especially for people with psychotic disorders. It will include discussion of ethical, legal, and social implications, data quality and privacy, human-AI interaction, and clinical validation.

Background:

An interdisciplinary Cardiff-Bristol team are working on delivery of precision medicine to psychotic disorders, transforming healthcare for these disabling conditions and are proposing an innovative transdiagnostic approach to the stratification, understanding and treatment of psychotic disorders, based on defining mechanistically-based groupings. The approach is based on the integration of genomic and clinical studies of psychotic disorders with advances in neuroscience, data science and therapeutics to transform the stratification and treatment of patients with psychosis.

AI can help in the treatment and diagnosis of psychotic disorders in various ways, including:
  • predict psychosis based on brain scans, speech patterns, and other biomarkers, helping to identify people at risk of developing psychosis and inform early intervention;
  • assist in delivering psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, and increase the accessibility of mental health care
  • monitor the symptoms and outcomes of people with psychotic disorders, using wearable devices, smartphone apps, or web-based platforms, providing real-time feedback and support to patients and clinicians;
  • help improve the quality and efficiency of collaborative care for people with psychotic disorders through better communication, coordination and decision-making between different health care providers

Who is it for:

The workshop is open to all colleagues in the University of Bristol with an interest and/or expertise in AI and mental health as well as colleagues in the NHS and other organisations. We particularly welcome participation of social scientists and ethicists, data scientists and experts in machine learning or other colleagues whose AI-related skills could be applied to the area of mental health.

Format:

The interdisciplinary workshop will be held in-person over lunch. Light lunch will be provided and participation is free. To register please complete a short registration form by Thursday 18 April 2024.
