Foreword from the Subject Editor

The principle behind the BILT Student Research Journal is that those studying for undergraduate and taught Masters degrees have something valuable, original and worthwhile to contribute to academic research. The submissions selected by the Law Subject Board are all, I believe, vindications of this principle. These thoughtful and well-written explorations of a range of legal issues are a credit to their authors, who I am sure will all go far academically.

Such is the variation between the legal issues explored, it is difficult to find a common theme running through the pieces. The issues covered range from business and finance regulation, to international trade, to the criminal law’s definition of rape. What does unite these excellent pieces of writing is a commitment to critical consideration of law’s place in the real world: how law functions ‘in action’, how it falls short and how it can be improved. Lawmakers might do well to consider the reasoned suggestions of our authors in all the areas they have covered.

As well as extending my thanks to our authors for contributing, I would also like to thank my team, without whom this section of the Journal could not have come about. They have all gone above and beyond their own roles in order to make this happen, pitching in throughout the process and in addition to their own academic workload. Therefore, I am deeply grateful to:
