Studying Iberia's early-medieval Christian liturgy

About the project

The Old Hispanic research team at Bristol University focuses on musical, liturgical, theological, notational and historical aspects of the rite celebrated in medieval Iberia until it was suppressed in favour of the Roman liturgy with its Gregorian chant repertoire.

From 2013-18, we were funded by the ERC to investigate the Old Hispanic Office (Old Hispanic Office Project).

From 2016-17, we had Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement from the AHRC

From 2017-20, we are leading a Leverhulme International Research Network (Processional Chants in Early Medieval Iberia).

From 2019-22, we are leading an AHRC-funded project (Doctrine, devotion, and cultural expression in the cults of medieval Iberian saints).
