Bacchae: A Rock Opera

17 February 2023, 3.00 PM - 17 February 2023, 5.00 PM

Reception Room, Wills Memorial Building, Queens Road, Bristol BS8 1RJ

The Institute of Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition (the IGRCT) is proud to present a staged reading and screening of Bacchae: A Rock Opera, a work in progress by Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer/composer J Landon Marcus and acclaimed singer/songwriter Johanna Warren.

The event, which is open to the public, will take place on Friday 17 February 2023, 3-5pm, in the Wills Memorial Building Reception Room. You can book your free ticket on Eventbrite.

This performance follows a week-long research and development workshop on the project, and will include live performances of select songs from the rock opera, as well as a screening of a pre-recorded film of the project.

At the conclusion of the showcase there will be a short panel discussion about the project. For the panel we will be joined by Dr David Bullen, Lecturer in Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway. David completed his practice-informed doctoral thesis on feminist theatre-makers’ engagements with Euripides’ Bacchae from 1908 to the twenty-first century in 2019, and is now writing the book Greek Tragedy in Twenty-First Century British Theatre, for Liverpool University Press.

This event has been organised by Dr Emma Cole, Senior Lecturer in Liberal Arts and Classics at the University of Bristol, who will be involved throughout the workshops, providing dramaturgical support, and will run the Q&A.
