German Christmas Lecture Professor Mererid Hopwood (Aberystwyth): The daughter of danger and the daughter of death: poets imagining language

Mererid Hopwood is Professor of Welsh and Celtic Studies at the University of Aberystwyth. She is a distinguished prize-winning poet, having won the Crown and the Chair of the National Eisteddfod as well as its Prose Medal. She studied Languages and Literature at university and has translated several works from Spanish, German and other languages into Welsh.  Among them are Bertolt Brecht's Der kaukasische Kreidekreis, performed by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru as Y Cylch Sialc in 2019, and C F Ramuz’ L’histoire du Soldat set to Igor Sravinksy’s composition, performed by BBC NOW.

Professor Hopwood's latest book, Dychmygu Iaith (Language Imagined, 2022) studies and translates poems written about language in a range of languages: German, Hindi, Irish, Mapudungun, Somali, Spanish, and more. Her lecture on this project will take us to the poetry of Germany, of Wales, and beyond.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the Students Common Room.
