Cannabis Africana: Drugs and Development in Africa

Research theme: Adversity, Globalisation

This AHRC/ESRC-funded project explores the links between cannabis, livelihoods and policy in Africa, focusing on case-studies of Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. Cultivated and consumed in parts of the continent for centuries, cannabis has also become a major trade item and source of income for many in rural and urban regions in various African countries despite its illegality. This project tracks the impact of cannabis on livelihoods and development in its case-study countries, while also tracking changes in policy and debate towards the substance at a time when cannabis policy is in flux globally. The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Universities of Bristol and Cape Town and will run for 3 years from October 2020. Through oral histories, surveys, archival research and interviews the project will contribute empirically and conceptually to policy debate in relation to cannabis in particular, and to the theme of drugs and development in general.
