Old Market

Once the heart of the city’s shopping district, Old Market is home to some of the oldest buildings in Bristol.

It’s a neighbourhood full of character and many of the historic buildings are still in use. The Stag and Hounds Public House has been a working pub since the early 1700s.

One of the most beautiful buildings in Old Market is the Trinity Centre. Trinity Community Arts Ltd runs this popular live music venue in a former church.

In more recent years, Old Market has evolved as Bristol's Gay Village. Many venues and businesses in the area have strong ties to the LGBTQIA+ community.

St Pauls

St Pauls became home to Jamaican, Asian and Irish communities in the 1950s.

A culturally significant neighbourhood, the area has strong roots in political activism. Members of St Pauls' African Caribbean community were essential to the Bristol Bus Boycott in 1963.

Many consider this movement to have influenced the 1968 Race Relations Act.

Activists from the Bristol Bus Boycott went on to found St Pauls Carnival, a bi-annual celebration of African Caribbean culture where thousands take to the streets to enjoy music, dance and spectacular costumes.
